Disneyland Park opened on July 17, 1955. Much of the surrounding area was not owned by The Walt Disney Company. The Walt Disney Company purchased some land around the park which had been occupied by commercial properties and built part of Downtown Disney and a brand new parking structure on the new land. The Mickey and Friends parking structure is the largest parking structure in the Western Hemisphere.citation needed] Disney's California Adventure, part of Downtown Disney, and one new hotel was built on Disneyland's original parking lot and newly purchased land.
Between May 5, 2005 and the end of September 2006 Disneyland park celebrated its 50th anniversary, known as The Happiest Homecoming on Earth. The current promotion for the resort is the Year of a Million Dreams.
The Disneyland Resort is currently headed by president Ed Grier formerly of the Disney Resort in Tokyo.
